Catholics celebrate lent
It's mostly because of the need to feel a part of something greater than ones self and the need for ritual. Catholicism is mostly ritual magic.
The prayers, the beads, the incense, its all part of the need common people see to perform rituals. It comforting.
"Confess, let me know your heart, let me know your sins, I can control you with them, and you will be forgiven. After you follow these simple steps, of course."
They pay their dues, they are forgiven, and they are free to sin again.
It's a lot more difficult to have no one to forgive you for your transgressions but yourself, and your peers. If you accept that there is no big father figure in the sky watching you and loving you, it can be a lot lonelier and darker especially if you have already lost your parents. It takes a lot more courage to face the world on your own, without the strength that prayer can lend, without the hope of a bright afterlife, with the full knowledge that this is it. There won't be eternity with your loved ones. This is all there is.
keke, its called lack of personal spirituality. most catholics have their understanding of higher powers diluted by the beliefs of the pseudo-political powers above them.
Long ago, we too where once crazy Chirstians, but then we comimited mass genocides. And that was not good for our rep, so we dicided to calm down.
I wish I could cite this forum for my essays in Religion and Society.

Catholocism has a lot more ceremony to it than most Protestants. It's a fancier religion. Well it used too... That's everyone but the Christians GB. Catholics, Protestants, and Mormons believe that Christ is the savior. Muslims believe that he was a prophet and the Jews... I'm not sure what they believe these days. Solly can we get a ruling on that?

Christianity is not about the boom boom boom and the crick caching... that's the Secular world. and GB, Secular is the proper term for nonreligious things... like holdin down a job, or talkin up the shorties.
