The romans used trained dogs for attack and greased pigs which they set on fire and loosed onto the field.
Indians, etc used elephants.
I think that if powerful animals with supernatural abilities were available for use, they would have been used, prolifically.
-
Machop and it's Evo's would have been the Roman's I think... sacred to Mars... though only priests of Mars and the most prestigious of warriors would have them.
-
not if they coun't train them people!
-
In the games AND in the shows, it's been shown that Pokemon display a tendency to be Trainable... Pokeballs Store Pokemon but they don't Mind Control them... Watch Lucario and the Mystery of Mew... two badass armies, loaded with pokemon go to war... and no pokeballs.

-
Kirbstomp... What justification do you have that Pokemon are untrainable?
-
-
it stands to reason that pokes are trainable, since dogs and pigs are and also elephants.
-
In real life you can't just train anything you want, it doesn't work that way.
-
look atash and pikachu kirberz lol.pikachu wasn't untrainable.it didn't even like ash.after ash showed he cared about pikachu pikachu let him train him.So if you treat a pokemon right in real life then you could.

I WANT A PET TIGER:) lol.

Look how much time and effort that took though, and for what? An electric mouse? And its children you will need to do the same thing... over an over and over again. And guess what? Every generation for atleast 10,00 years will shock you right at first. But ceratain animals like dogs and cows will become completely submissive after only 2 or 3 generations of taming. And elephants have never been domesticated, but they are fucking ass huge so we used them anyway. I suppose you might see people using the biggest and the best animals then, but nothing less then the best will be tamed without being domesticated.
-
All the animals we have ever domesticated (besides cats) are species that live in groups. It is easier to control pack animals like wolves or cattle so long as you put in the effort of taming the natural leader of that group just because we understand pack mentality as well as they do.
And the ONLY reason why it takes 2 or 3 generations of cattle to become domesticated now is because after thousands of years of being domesticated, they are biologically programmed to follow our lead (evolution at work). This is why you can brake a feral horse and make it completely ride-able within a relatively generous amount of time.
And all domesticated animals are mammals. Pikachu would fall into the mammal category and I'm sure with a little food and coercing, you can theoretically tame them to at least be friendly to you.

It'd come down to Snorlax using self-destruct, a tactic most likely utilised by the Japanese. Most of the other Pokémon would just be used as human shield sort of things.
