god what films have imagery and symbolism as important to the film as say, those elements were to the sopranos?
and did you notice a lot of those extra hidden touches to the sopranos on first watch or was it after reading up on it that you found out about it

The Godfather, obviously... though originally the oranges weren't meant to symbolize death. the cinematographer, Gordon Willis was known as "the prince of darkness" because he liked to film shots in really low light. The Production designer added in the oranges in some shots to add a little color, and they happened to click and they went with it.
