    They eat pokemon... like in one episode of the anime, I think it's James who imagines eating his Magikarp.

    Actually, I think the pokeball's inner workings were described in an earlier episode. Supposedly, inside the pokeball is an area where pokemon can relax. From this, I'm guessing that pokemon going into a pokeball are transformed into computer data (like when they go into the PC).
