I hate it. Yeah we don't have it here but after reading The Chamber by John Grisham I'm a staunch enemy of capital punishment. Because a cog doesn't work, doesn't mean you should throw it away. You could fix it.

I hate it. Yeah we don't have it here but after reading The Chamber by John Grisham I'm a staunch enemy of capital punishment. Because a cog doesn't work, doesn't mean you should throw it away. You could fix it.
I have a serious cognitive dissonance on this topic.
Some cogs can't be fixed and should therefore be done away with. But I think life is sacred and no one has the right to take another person's life for any reason and everyone has an equal right to be as fucked up as they want.
But also some people are a danger to society, unconformable and need to be done away with without being a financial burden.
Exile isn't an option, prison is costly to the tax payers, and to be truthful they don't need to be alive. But on the other hand who am I to judge?
Unless the evidence is unimpeachable... Then why should they live if they have raped, tortured, killed and eaten 14 young children? I mean there are times when death is the only option... Isn't there?

One spends money hopelessly on "correction" so they can waste the rest of their lives spending federal money and allowing them to most likely commit more crimes while in prison
Well capital punishment still seems pointless. Making the criminals wait on death row and expecting to be gassed or injected in a month or two is just inhuman. Some of them get corrected by the whole prison experience, executing them seems simple but it brings a lot of consequences. Sure, some of them would kill again. Some of them wouldn't.
But whatever they did to have a jury decide to put them to death was probably more inhuman. And for those who get life sentences, what is the point in correction? So they have good table manners when they eat their three square meals until they die in prison? They don't even hand out the death penalty that often, only in the most severe cases. It's honestly a shame they don't hand out more of them. The prison system could do well with less mouths to feed
Truthfull, the Prison system needs some kind of total overhaul. You'll notice that in the past when people had their hand cut off for stealing, they generally weren't repeat offenders? A severe flogging often seemed to work out pretty well. And branding certain offenders with a hot iron that displayed their crimes was effective at least in warning people who they were dealing with. Yes we live in a much more liberal and humanitarian society. And yes those past punishments probably weren't particuarly humane, but they were effective. WE need to find some way of punishing people for their crimes without having to provide for them for 20+ years of their life.

So? It's inhumane to do anything to get you on death row anyway. If some guy stabs two innocent children to death for example, I don't see a reason to not make his as death slow and painful as possible.
