Ervan's eyes lit up. Rats? Was it coincidence? Or something more? "I'm sorry," he said to the man beside him, "but this is an opportunity I cannot let slip by." He leapt up and virtually sprinted to Inez's side. "I'd be more than happy to join you," he said, smiling. "It just so happens that I've been wondering for some time now just how many flaming rats it takes to adequately illuminate a cellar, and I would be honoured if you would be so kind as to assist me in this little experiment." He held out his hand to her. "Would you do me that honour?"
Ankerid watched Ervan's performance with not a little amazement. He was so strange, and yet in some ways the kind of person Ankerid wanted to be. "Can I help too?" he asked, standing up.
"Of course!" replied Ervan, grinning.
Ankerid smiled and joined the pair. Perhaps he could grow to like it here.
