Well, it would give you an idea of timeline which was the question I believe
Some days were fast, some were slow. It's the nature of the beast.
Also, I might add that in my opinion the best way to learn is through doing. If you have a desire to write, join in and see how you like it. You can always leave if it doesn't suit you.
Can you join a story in progress? What are the character creation requirements?
"A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects." - Time Enough For Love, by Robert Heinlein
You just need to find a plausible reason for joining later.
Character creation requirements are found on the first page... Mine is a bit complex, but basically you just fill out this profile:

One thing I find works as well: When in doubt, use humor.
Qoorl's character joined Pirates after like 30 or 50 pages or something, and he literally fell out of a tree into our path. It worked. It was amusing.
