That's like middle class people needing the government to show them what Prius to buy and what to paint the living room; they can handle it.

the thing is free markets dont work, and their irrational bubbles burst and they need the government to clean it up. also they need the government to protect them from organized labor gaining influence.

You've got a point there, but I think that the reason they do it is because, percentage-wise, rich people pay alot of money in taxes just because they're rich. I don't think it's necessarily a choice on their part, more the governments. At least not all the time.
I mean, taxing Bill Gate's income is going to be much more profitable than, say, taxing me
Actually I'm getting a nice little tax return in a few weeks, I can't wait

plus you have so many rich people who made their money off ylthe government. military contractors of course. tech industries that rely on the pentagon system for their tax-funded R&D. energy companies who need the government to keep pesky natives from stopping the exploitation of their resources. etc etc

It's because many of the elite members of the forum are socialist.

Hey for those of you who are socialists, I'm not trying to offend, I'm honestly curious. Would you still believe in socialism if you were part of the rich upper-class?

who knows. everyone is a product of their circumstances more or less afterall. if i was still the empathetic kind of person i am now and did the same kind of research into the matter im sure i would reach similar conclusions. i certainly have less desire for high wealth these days after i really started to look into socialism and my ideology got formed so i guess that speaks for something. i mean when i used to see pictures of big houses and shit i would first think "that would be cool to live in", now my first thought is "who the fuck needs to live in a house like that do you know how much good the capital that went into that house could be put to".

"Irrational" bubbles? Perhaps to the unenlightened, and certainly not to a market advisor. An example is in order! Barring the fact you obviously didn't read my link to Economics in One Lesson, I'll give you a 11 minute alternative.

Secondly, rich people pay next to nothing in taxes. That's a key step in becoming rich is how to sidestep the otherwise crippling tax laws. The government probably gets very little from Bill Gates himself since everything from his house to his dog's food is purchased through his company.

Speaking of houses, God, I was actually very seriously considering going to Florida and getting me a decent spread. Not to live in mind you, this wide spread of foreclosures has left a killer buyer's market and I intend to get a nice vacation home to rent out.
