Default When do pickles become a condiment? OR: do they ever?

Now people eat pickles whole all the time. But when they are cut into small pieces they are used only on sandwiches really, and that makes them condiments. BUT, they are still pickles no matter how they are cut. Can you call something a totally different order of food due to the way it is processed even though it is infact the same food?

Pickles might be in a category of condiment/food all their own. Pickles are the aardvarks of the food world

I love pickles. I think the sliced ones that come in a bottle are condiments.

It's not a matter of the like or dislike, although I would never accept pickles into my codiments rack. Pickles don't add more of a flavour as a style of seasoning but I would consider them more as a seperate filling on its own. And you can eat pickles on their own as well as in sandwiches, whilst generally you wouldn't eat a packet of ketchup alone or any other common condiments. Because they're simply finely diced it wouldn't quite qualify as a condiment until it were some sort of pickly mush.

A tomato transforms from fruit/vegetable/thing into a condiment when it is blended, why not the same for pickles? Allbeit pickles are not blended, they are sliced, much like the tomato you can find on any Big Mac.

That said, are sliced tomatoes and lettuce considered condiments when they are placed on a sandwich?

Moved to Where Discussion Takes Place. You're clogging my board with your pickles debate, I'm afraid. My town will remain untainted by pickles.

Just so everyone knows, when a pickle it sliced the wide (sandwich) way, it is referred to as a girkin in the Jewish community. When we put anything other than meat on a sandwich, it becomes a condiment. LoL
