    Default The Problem of Suffering

For those of you who don't know, the Problem of Suffering goes something like this.

    Premise 1: God is good.
Premise 2: God is all powerful.
    Premise 3: People suffer.

Conclusion: Logical contradiction. Why would a good, all powerful God allow us to suffer?

So, let's hear your answers. First person to say, "It brings out the best in people," will be told to fuck off for being a cold-hearted bastard unworthy of claiming to represent a supposedly moral group.

Why would a good God test people in such horrible ways?

Nice joke ed. But now there's a problem? Which god are we discussing here? If we're talking the christian god I'll see what I can do, if not, there really isn't much I can say.

The Catholic god is cooler than the Christian one.

Catholicism and christianity are the same thing, just slightly different flavors.

The only reason we suffer is because the way we treat each other.
God is love and everything else. If we start loving each other you will be able to see the great things God can do.
God created us in his image, he's in each of us. The majority in search of God hasn't realized that he is within us, in our hearts. God works through us to make good things happen. When we love each other, great things happen.

Another thing. God has given us free-will. We choose not to love each other and that is what causes our suffering. If we didn't have free-will, then there is no reason to live. Through our choices can God work through us and miracles happen... or not. It's all dependent on the humans.

Of course, that's the main stream religion that a vast majority of people are.
The people who believe in the same God as Abraham. My post will not only speak to Christians, but to the Jewish and the Muslim.

But Ed was referencing Abraham's God.
Being a Hellenic I don't see how Zeus even fits into this at all. Nor could I see the Norse Gods fitting into it as well.
They've created people for the fuck sake of it, to see how many people will worship who (the gods and goddesses).

I wasn't specific enough and I apologise. The Problem of Evil refers to the Abrahamic God.

So why was I born with cystic fibrosis, a genetic condition that inhibits breathing and digestion by causing the mucus produced by the lungs and pancreas to thicken? In the lungs this reduces lung capacity and promotes the growth of bacteria and viruses. In the pancreas it inhibits the production of digestive enzymes and insulin. Are you saying that this was the result of me not loving people? If so, how could I love people before I was born? And if you say this is punishment for the sins of a previous life, why am I, a person with no knowledge of this previous life and no responsibility for its actions, suffering as I am now with a chronic and potentially fatal genetic condition?

"Maybe he's not punishing you at all." Really? Then what's he done, given me cystic fibrosis to see how I react? That's pretty sadistic. How about I cut off one of your limbs just to see how you react?

Your God is a bastard and does not deserve my love under any circumstances.

Because the physical world is nothing and your spiritual self is who needs to learn. It's a test you appointed yourself to over come (in the spiritual realm).
Physically you cannot remember your previous life, but your spirit does and that is why you feel so frustrated. God had nothing to do with that. God can only allow things to happen.
Spiritually you would have to surrender to this condition; when I say surrender I don't mean to be defeated, but to accept and learn from it.

So I, the physical being that thinks and feels, is undergoing a test for the benefit of a spiritual being that may not even be suffering? Wow. That's great. The god that devised this system deserves a medal for inflicting pain on innocents to help bad people become better.

And yes I am bitter. Being told that some omnipotent fuck is responsible for my condition does make one resent said omnipotent fuck, and with good reason.

Ed this situtation is like the test in Adam and Eve. If you think thats wrong then too bad for you because god thinks its right and does what he does.
