A step beyond simply creating novel traits, scientists have basically worked some copypasta with DNA to make an entirely new species of bacteria. By cutting and splicing genetic sequences any which way to Sunday scientists are thinking they will soon be able to make a whole menagerie of single celled organisms to do seemingly impossible tasks.

We've been doing that for ages, though. They engineered bacteria to produce insulin. It was in one of my biology text books.
Yeah but that was just splicing in plasmids. This is constructing an entirely novel DNA strand, removing the DNA from a bacteria, and plopping the new stuff in. The whole creature changes into w/e was coded on the DNA.

I tend to disagree. Understanding the intricacies involved in nature isn't a bad thing because everything they remove in the magical aspect is more than made up for in the amazing intricacy that genuinely makes up the world.

The bacteria they're hoping to develop in the near future is one that can produce energy by extracting hydrogen from the air or something. I'm no scientist, so excuse me if I just made an outlandishly incorrect assumption.

No, it will take in CO2 like normal plants and put out hydrocarbon fuels. Plants break CO2 and H2O down into hydrogen and oxygen ions during the normal process of photosynthesis and put out O2 and H2O. Interestingly the O2 comes from the water molecules and the H2O gets it's oxygen from the CO2 molecules. What they could engineer is an algae that instead of producing O2 and H2O would produce hydrocarbon fuels. Or perhaps they could get it to produce the fuel in place of glucose.

All that means is that God isn't necessary.
No since there is no total proof that life can make its self from inanimate material. Infact since we (a sentaint creature) where able to create life it actually prooves God's existance even more.
