In the first gen games, always named the rival Gary. So long as the game allows it (3rd gen did not for some reason) I'll always try to name the rival after their anime counterpart.

Well in diamond I named him JOSH! lmao the first time I named him Ur Mom.
"Ur Mom's Mom: oh, Ur Mom is upstairs....Ur Mom is always in a rush, I wonder who he takes it after?" lmao.
And the first time I ever played pokemon which was Yellow, I didn't know what rival meant so I just named him Rival. Go figure.
