It does really piss me off though that so many people neglect the freedom that's given to them upon living here. It's a gift that we are abusing by relying more than ever on the government. The American Dream is to take the initiative and climb up the ladder of success through perseverance and hard work. No one's going to reach the top by dropping out of highschool and signing up for welfare. People need to realize in order to make a decent living, you have to push yourself and follow your dreams. Why waste my breath, though, because it's obvious we'll never reach that level of society at this rate. Not as long as Obama's in office, that is.

well, our education system is what's wrong. Really, if we continue with our education-- success means becoming a professor. Which really isn't all that necessary to become successful. Following our passion will lead us to our success. What if the doctor told Gillian Lynne's mother that instead of dancing she needed to take pills and shut it. We would have never gotten CATs (musical) or other broadway hits. She became successful because she would rather dance and sing than do math and science that she wasn't interested in at all.

I love how math and science are always the subjects people can't stand in school when they're probably the most useful and the least aligned with some ridiculous agenda. Who cares about art, about drama, about creative writing, or any of the other myriad useless degrees out there? People only take them because they're easy and, on the surface, more interesting. Shit, I'd take statistics over animal science any day.

lol. I'm going for my Science and Engineering degree. That's my passion... as an artist who loves to create, why not continue with greater pieces of practical art?
No where did I say that Math or Science is difficult nor is it all that necessary to learn certain parts of each to be successful.
My argument was about having an education system that allows students to pursue what they are most talented in to become successful.

But one must know the drama and the emotion in order to understand the human. How else will FBI agents have empathy with the criminals? To understand them and connect with them so that the agents can capture them quicker?

also: nations with a larger social welfare system in fact have MORE class mobility than nations with less of a social welfare system. the us has the worst economic mobility in the developed world. also has the worst social welfare program. so yes the american dream is a load of garbage and anyone who subscribes to its principals is factually incorrect.

this is a major problem but again i blame the school system and society. math and science are about learning how the world works and recognizing relevant and interesting patterns, these are things that humans are INNATELY very interested in. it is the school system which teaches these subjects like shit and squashes that desire to learn them.

and yeah drama and creative writing and ethnic studies etc ARE worthless and shouldn't exist as degree programs or be taught in schools. they are hobbies. hey, if you're interested in a hobby, go ahead and read up on it in your spare time. but you don't get a degree in a hobby, that is ridiculous.

    You just contradicted yourself.
"it is the school system which teaches these subjects like shit and squashes that desire to learn them."
If that statement is true, then it has to be applied to the drama, creative writing, and etc. classes that seem to be worthless because they are being taught incorrectly.

Math and science are really what develop one's mind, not so called "creative" subjects. I mean,if you are creative, you just are. No one needs a diploma for that.
Also,to put it simply- to know about the world and how it works actually expands your mind, giving it more material to be creative with. After one learns all they can about these subjects, they're free to apply their creativity however they want anyway.

Hit it right on the nose, Trixie. I just finished up a documentary on " What makes a genius" and it was concluded that a major part of creativity resides in the genes passed down from the parent and how the brain functions when pertaining to a certain skill from birth. This revolutionizes the whole concept that all humans are born as a clean slate, capable of mastering any profession. A grand master of chess's brain functions differently from a trained professional who's spent their whole life playing the game. The difference is the brain activity is more sophisticated in the grand master, and even before having learned the game of chess, the same patterns were present. That being said, talent is, without question, reliant on heredity more than anything else.

They also mentioned how a man with an average IQ was the inventor of the first transistor, which led to the first microchip. IQ isn't always related to brilliance/talent. He was the first man to receive a nobel prize for his level of IQ

Holy crap, God actually agrees with me. I guess I should fix this by saying I'd like to see how much "class mobility occurs in these heavily socialist states. That is, is it all upwards regardless of income or does it all seem to trend towards lower middle class?

There are people who have a surprising amount of prowess pertaining to the creative arts. As for drama, I'm assuming in the U.S.A. there are people who devote their time out-of-school to obtaining proof of various degrees of ability in drama, and the Royal Shakespeare Academy maintains that only the finest actors who have been taught by the best can be endowed with the ability to perform in such a prestiguous setting. So whilst drama is a hobby it's taken very seriously by a large amount of people. What should be the case is that all diploma opportunities in things like drama should be cancelled and drama should be removed as something to receive a degree in as it doesn't present any arbitary employment options. The emphasis should be on elite drama academies rather than easily-attainable entry to a degree program.
