Red Scale?

Ok, so I'm trying to get the EXP share and I need the Red Scale from the Red Gyarados. How do I get it if I caught the Red Gyarados?

If you have the redscale then you go to Mr. Pokemon's house and exchange it for one.

I know that, which is why I'm trying to get the red scale. But I don't know how to get the red scale

Defeat the red gyrados/catch it.

I caught it and showed it to Mr. Poke'mon. I didn't know that you could just show him the Gyarados ^^;
