Let's nominate them.
Scratch that I think avenged sevenfold has a song deemed worthy of the crown. Lemme listen through em all and find out which it is.

dear god no. solo is garbage and weak i cant stand it or the song.
yep just posted to bash the hell out of this. haaaaaa
Although I never got into the alternative genre I must say the infamous guitar solo from Through Fire and Flames pretty much owns this spot.
But from a non-technical standpoint I always foudn Hotel California's ending solo to be absolutely fantastic.
I was thinking through the fire and flames in the back of my head. It was pretty hardcore, but.. I just find myself air guitaring to free bird way too often to pass it up.
FM.... GTFO

john fucking petrucci or GTFO
and A7X had some great solos in their time, i'll give em' that
another excellent solo would be in this song:
anyway, discuss.
your welcome
solly was able to say the point i was trying to make. technical and nontechnical. i respect complexity that still sounds fucking amazing more than simple stuff that sounds mediocre.
The best solo in the world, technically, is the solo in Stream of Consciousness by Dream Theater. There is one person I've seen able to do it properly on YouTube.
But I appreciate it might not be the most emotional solo ever and I also appreciate that there are solos that come and feel right, and this doesn't really fit in with the rest of the song. Still, Dream Theater did try to gear their talents in to making a track that was poignant and actually had a theme but also did show off their fast-playing skills and you have to admire them for that. Stream of Consciousness is NOT just a show-off of ability, but it certainly incorporates elements of 'LOOK HOW FAST WE CAN PLAY'.
Also may I point out that the image on the 3's and 7's embedded YouTube looks like a penis.
This list cannot be argued with (in no particular order)

you have no knowledge of the great band pink floyd.
OH
and btw, slash is not the best guitarist, nor the best soloist in history. neither is jimmy paige.
John Petrucci of dream theater is the best guitarist of all time. hands down.

Motley Crue needs to be added to the list too.
I was just listening to Planet Boom earlier, and its a great song.
Their instrumental song Bittersuite has a great guitar solo in it too.
