For the past two weeks, I've been working on configuring a new server at Rackspace for PokeDream. We've been with our current host, Netfirms, for over 4 years now, and I'm sick and tired of dealing with them. Netfirms is dog slow (preliminary tests show a 5x speed-up generating a PokeRep entry for Bulbasaur on the new server compared to Netfirms), offers little control over server configuration (for those who have an idea, Rackspace offers me full root access, meaning I can configure the server to do just about anything, short of making it do backflips), charges more than they should for their service, and doesn't scale well.
PokeDream is sort of an elephant in a small cage and it's about time we put it in something big enough for it to run around in. Within the next week, I will be pointing pokedream.com to this new server. What this means for our users is a significantly faster, more reliable site with limitless room for expansion.
The Forums will definitely see a significant speedup. Additionally, I'll be upgrading us to the latest vBulletin soon after the move.
Happy Halloween![]()
