the problem is that conception is an entirely arbitrary point at which to consider something 'life.' logically a fetus could be defined as life at the point it gains a level of sentience/perception of reality/feeling/etc. until then it is potential life, a potential person - just as any sperm cell is a potential life/person.
before a fetus has any type of self awareness at all it doesn't make sense to consider abortion of that fetus murder if you don't also consider masturbation murder.

its not a matter of killing a being that is self-aware, its about not being a complete douche and allowing people to never have any sexual responsibility. masturbation is completely different because sperm are not a potential human without conception. the wasting of cells owned by one person is like skin cells that die perpetually. they are perpetually replaced until death (or in some cases, disease)
abortion is acceptable in situations where they know the mother would die in child birth, or if they knew their genetics wouldn't conceive a healthy, normal child.
i believe that it should be limited. not outlawed. if people could have some self control about themselves in this era, maybe this world wouldn't have so many issues like this.

Whether it be stopping a mother from dying, or a family from going into the poor house because of an extra liability, or to stop a soul from being raised by a teenage mother in a bungalow with her crack-head boyfriend. of course, using a abortion as a form of contraception is stupid, however I have heard of a good method in Ontario. Your first abortion is free, the second half-off, the rest you gotta pay the whole fee.

Forgive me if I'm digging myself into a hole, but how? I for one try to think in terms of how beneficial this child can be to society. If you conceive a child, and by some terrible fate of whatever god you worship, there's a 100% chance that it's going to have a genetic defect or disease that will cripple it for life, why would you let that child be born? Exactly what use is a vegetable going to be to society? Chances are, that child isn't going to live to see adulthood anyways, so why put it through that kind of torture? I know a woman who had a child that was born with a genetic defect, and instead of raising her herself, she put the girl in a 'home', and let them raise her. Sure she did the smart thing and shifted responsibility to a better person because she was too young, but that child can never grow up and put back the resources she used into society. Matter of fact, that woman said she didn't expect her to live to 18. Just...why?
In the case of the mother, I dunno. You usually aren't able to tell that the pregnancy will be fatal to the mother due to some complication until way past the first trimester, usually a few weeks before birth. The body would self-abort early enough (within 6-8 weeks) if it senses that the pregnancy is going to go wrong. I wouldn't say abort the child if it's going to kill the mother and it's due in a few weeks; I'd tell those doctors to try damn hard to keep the little thing alive via life support. If it just isn't possible, well... sometimes you win sometimes you lose. There's no point in destroying an already productive member of society.
