here's how my experience was on my first poke forum (pokelegion):
we had a chatbox where we hosted tourneys, but more people posted than spammed the chatbox. it was an easy form of communication, but some people liked to contribute to large topics rather than jump into a bunch of ridiculous banter. the site lasted for 2 years, and has since then sold its domain, but at the time it thrived with its xat chatbox.
it could possibly become a liability, but it never seems to hurt big forums like newgroundsBBS and other poke forums.

There was a time, back when we had DK, Hikari, PK and others, when the Spam was a genuinely good place to be. But then they left.
Although I don't normally recommend chatboxes, with the state the forum is in a chatbox may be a necessary, if temporary, implementation.

I doubt a chatbox would hurt the site, or do anything but improve it. Most sites have at lest an external chat like IRC they can go to and they do pretty darn well.
