Patriotism - Loyalty to one's country

Nationalism - Loyalty to one's nation

Patriots believe the Republic of Ireland is pretty nice. Nationalists believe that the Nation of Ireland deserves the whole island.

    Also this:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patriotism

It has had different meanings over time and its meaning is highly dependent upon context, geography, and philosophy. Excluding differences caused by these dependancies, Patriotism is a devotion to one's country. In a generalized sense that applies to all countries and peoples, patriotism is a devotion to one's country for no other reason than being a citizen of that country.

It is a related sentiment to nationalism, but nationalism is not necessarily an inherent part of patriotism

In other words, most members of the IRA are Nationalists, as they don't fight for Northern Ireland because they're citizens but because of their cultural and ethnic descent.

The country of Ireland is divided, any true patriot would want it made whole again. So nationalist or patriot, either way, England needs to get out and let the Irish have Ireland.

Any true patriot would support the government, which as far as I know is neutral on the Northern Ireland stance at the moment.

The government has been infiltrated by the British supporters. Spineless twits who lick so much tea-drinker asshole as to be unable to speak or even think without first asking their British overlord's opinion.

Any true patriot would ignore their government officials and SEEK A UNITED IRELAND ONCE AND FOR ALL.

i'm in the us army serving my country. i'm pretty patriotic but totally agree with PK on this. the us was founded on secular ideals and many of our founding fathers were deist who's god were more like Spinoza or were atheist. considering how in england everyone had to be the kings religion at the time, it's no wonder that the us wanted to be secular.
it does surprise me that america has become the most christian nation while the people of england have a secular mindset.

i would say nationalism tends to be more intellectual and patriotism is more chauvinistic. its a nuanced difference i guess.
