Maybe not the most serious topic of discussion but how would the warfare of our history be different if pokemon were real?
Like say... What tactics might have changed and how might battles have gone differently in say.. The Punic Wars?

Fucking Ubers everywhere. Oh, you mean with actual pokemon and not the card game!
It would've been very interesting...and cruel to say the least. Definitely more inhumane deaths and battles.

Hrmm... Carthage had the superior navy but assuming Rome had access to any good water types that advantage would be completely destroyed.... It wouldn't take much for say...a single lapras to destroy a naval vessel of the time, I would think.

The thing is, you have to account for any combination of Electric-type ambushes or pincer movements. At sea a Water-type navy has a massive advantage, but I believe Ice-types and Earth-types could readily destroy a few, I dunno, "ships" or groups.
However, if we take into account climate as a serious factor for readily available counter types, then Rome has the distinct advantage bar none. But should we factor in such 'wild card" offensive units, then it could've been a strange battle indeed.
I'm thinking there's too much theory involved with this and too many factors to take in.
The Punic Wars were a series of three wars between Carthage and Rome... a long time ago. Rome won all three times and in the end they utterly wiped out Carthage.

The sheer mass of factors and goings on to discuss, is why this could actually be an interesting discussion! For starts.. let's say the world during the Punic Wars only has access to the first 149 pokemon... 142 assuming that the fossil pokemon were already extinct...

Damn, I'll have to actually look at a list to see what other pokemon could potentially be eliminated.. Ah Porygon is one of course. Once we whittle it down to a manageable number based on the types that COULD have existed and the geographic area... a better theoretical analysis of individual battles and an overall discussion of tactics is feasible.

no dragon type as they originated around china

The question is, would there be any war at all?
Given some of the descriptions of Pokemon, if they are readily available, they would have quite the destructive power, possibly more than anything we have right now. So would anyone actually use Pokemon for battle, given that the other side could retaliate in kind, and would end in a Mutually Assured Destruction similar to atomic weapons of nowadays.

how would we hold the pokemon.we would have no pokeballs and if we tried to hold them captive at that cetury they would wipe us from the earth

that's why we befriend them. and consider why the world of pokemon is so nature centered. and technology is all about constraining pokemon and keeping them domesticated.

Pokemon odviously live in a communist paradise. Fools.
Because of the superior navy, one could assume that Carthage had more access to trade with other countries, they could theoretically have dragon type. Also the city had a huge necropolis so it could have access to more ghost/psychic type while Rome had religion which would likely frown on the use of such.
As we know, ghost type and psychic type are pretty brutal.
Since they had access to trade with Egypt, who had access to the rest of Africa they would very likely have desert and jungle pokemon as well.
So Carthage would have
Water (most of the world, via their navy)
Plant (african jungles)
Poison (african jungles)
Bug (for who has larger bugs than Africa?)
Ground (african plains)
Ghost (necropolis)
Psychic (necropolis and also african tribes)
Dark (almost certainly banned by the church)
Dragon (via china)
Rome would have more limited access to trade, and the church would probably seriously limit the types allowable for common use.
So Rome would conceivably have:
Fire
Rock
Fighting
Ice (through it's Germanic contacts)
Plant
Water
I think that Carthage would very likely win the pairing.
Rome would have fighting types because of the colleseums right?
Also they should have access to steel type to right? They did have steel armor or was it bronze?

Better organization would have won it for them.
The way the Roman army was organized was it's crowning glory. If they didn't have such strict social structures and concepts, they wouldn't have won nearly so many wars as they did. The only reason Rome fell was because it stretched itself too thin and refused to be satisfied with what was already conquered.
Same problem the US is facing right now, IMO.
Actually the church wouldn't have been a problem, during the Punic Wars Rome was still using the Roman pantheon...they'd LOVE shit like POkemon
