    Default 'the people'

annoying phrase that comes up in political rhetoric. how can anyone ever hope to catch even the mildest essence of public opinion?

there are only two ways you can try and extract the vitriol of popular thought: the first is through the media and the second is through acquaintances. it's possible that there's a third, through campaigning and talking to the average joe, but the average joe isn't going to tell you precisely what he thinks about every issue unless you know him well.

the media is skewered and biased. acquaintances are not an accurate depiction of the way the population want stuff done.

thus, no political who has ever said 'the people' has been talking about what the people want.

Polls asking what people want? Sure they could be lieing, or have some motive, but in general polls tell yuo exactly what the people want.

Voting in general also tells you, yes again there are other reasons, with voting more of people wanting a strong and experienced leader, but its still a good way of knowing the people are generally behind you.

Yes but statics can be um....created in a what which gives bias results. Like polling only certain people.

polls asking what people want are far from accurate.

It's not just that. Pollsters tend to pose a really specific question and then log how many people say 'Yes', and tend to manipulate the way the question's phrased. There was something I saw recently and they asked some people in America, 'Would you like government-led healthcare?' and it was universally refused and they asked some more people, 'Would you like public healthcare?' and that proposition was universally accepted. So they're not really a way to capture public opinion. If all you do is ask a couple of people a 'yes' or a 'no' question there's really no way you can know precisely what they think.

that's cause people are dumb. There's no excuse for that result. and asking americans any political question with in the past 10 years is going to give garbage anwsers.
