lotr was terrible. from a writing perspective, twilight is leagues ahead of lotr.
Although I wouldn't say the movie always ruins it, it can go either way. An example being eragon. The books were alright (still haven't read the last one tho), but the movie totally mutilated the story in such a way they couldn't have done a sequel if they wanted to.
On the other hand there was harry potter, which although the movies left out some details and the occasional character or two (peeves never was in a movie), the movies were close enough the those who only read and those who only watched could discuss the story at least on a basic level.

eragon books suck
I find them meh. could be better, could be worse. My point was the difference in shittiness between the books and the movie.

I couldn't finish Brisingr. Honestly, I was in the middle of A Dance With Dragons at the time I got it from the library, and by comparison it was terrible.

Okay. If I ever get an opportunity to I might try to read it though, just because I don't like unfinished stories.
If it's anything like the LOTR movies, the hobbit is going to be good.
