What are they?
This thread is a thinly veiled attempt to get you guys to make me a reading list.
"1984" for the sake of basic political awareness, and it's not long and hard-to-understand. I'd say every teenager should also be made to read books that involve World War II, since the books on the U.K. curriculum are about civil rights and not our country's history or anything. "Catch-22" might be a good choice.
I genuinely think that everyone should read "Everyman" by John Bunyan but I'm probably alone in that respect

I've actually been meaning to read 1984, and a brave new world as well. But reading is yet another of those things I can't find time for.
As for contributing to your list though, I haven't gotten time to read much in ages, so I have nothing better than mid level nonsense/fantasy.

I've been asking my friend to loan me catch-22 for half a year.
"Brave New World" might be useful to read so you can immediately identify problems when someone suggests an idea for exactly how the world should work.

Which I tend to think about often actually.
Any other recommendations regarding psycology/sociology related things? I'm planning to go in the direction of criminal profiling as a career.

I still maintain that Feed is a brilliant book.

No, Feed is pre-during apocalyptic dystopia. (Almost) everyone has a data feed in their head. Constant access to internet, messenging, etc. It's about a teenager, written from his point of view and showcases how people are getting more stupid despite our greater access to information.

sure that isn't next week's reality? Sounds good tho. Who wrote it?

M.T. Anderson. No seriously, its a pretty dark book lampshaded with 'wacky teenage antics' itks a really terrible future that looks terrifyingly plausible. No more non human animal life... Steak is grown genetically in huge farms. The world is litteraly falling apart and everyone is too busy to notice.

brave new world is reasonably well written but so obnoxious
How about we just read Time and national geographic.
