The NHS works completely fine. Long waiting lists and lack sometimes of patient-centered care, also massive administrative costs... but it works, people get treated and rich people can pay for better insurance. It's not as good as in the rest of Europe. Cuba is a pretty silly country to pick, considering the sheer number of countries who have effective "government mandated" healthcare systems.
Maybe it won't work in the U.S., and forcing Americans to buy health insurance is probably a bad idea, but meanwhile we'll be sitting here in the U.K. not getting AIDS and not having third world health insurance
If insurance wasn't so expensive, then there would be less gripe about it, but as its stands medicine is a for-profit business, and just like any other company hospitals will raise the prices of their products which thus increases the price of insurance.

there is anecdotal evidence both ways so stick to the facts please, those facts being britain JUST FOR EXAMPLE spends less on healthcare, has a healthier population and wider access to healthcare
We have better cancer treatments and less fatalities because of it. Why? Because competition and capitalism, not socialism, gives incentives for more advancements in medicine.

Consequently, this makes for higher prices. A business's a business.
That's the theory behind why some experts believe we aren't curing as many diseases as we used to. Doctors just give everyone antibiotics because they make money that way.
Back when the vaccines for polio and TB were created, there was more incentive to cure people, not make money.
This is why I support Doctors Without Borders. They cure people for the sake of curing, not for the money.
I'm pretty sure Cuba has quite the track record of biotech advancements, especially considering their semi-isolationism
I think a much more reasonable first step would be to cut down the ridiculous amounts of regulations on insurance companies that practically give the big companies a monopoly in their region of operation
most of the substantial medical advancements come from US universities. where most of the scientific advancements come from, not because of capitalism, but because US universities attract the best researchers in the world because US universities get enormous research funding from the federal government.
not to say private business has NO impact on medical advancement but a lot of it is in dumb consumer drugs like viagara
If I'm being perfectly honest I don't give two shits what the government spends its money on as long as its operating at a reasonable deficit and taxes are reasonable. Neither of which are true right now.

Yeah I'd agree with that. The tax code is really fucked up. A simple flat tax would expedite things so much more and the government would see a shit-ton more revenue.
a flat tax is one of the worst ideas in the entire world. the government needs to be funded, if the rich were taxed at the same level as the most the poor could reasonably afford to be taxed then revenue would drop tremendously. also morally the rich SHOULD have more responsibility to pay into society than the poor.
