then again most of those people have dumb opinions about movies
Also I didn't see the movie, but that's because I've noticed a few trends in movies having worked in the industry a number of years. Movies that are heavily advertised generally suck. They advertise well in advance and prolifically. Some movies, like Iron Man, turned out good even though they were heavily advertised but you then look at the trailers. If the trailers show all the good parts of the movie, like you can pretty much grasp everything that is going to happen in the movie from the trailer, then it's going to suck. Lastly, there's movies based on books. Movies *loosely* based on books, for instance Harry Potter 4-7, Bladerunner, etc. are good because they take the theme of the book and rework it entirely to fit a the cinematic art form. IMO Harry Potter 5 was the best movie in the series because it ignored so much of the shit the book had in it and just focused on the stuff that translated well to the screen. Then you have movies based on books to the T. These tend to range from disappointing to god awful because they're forcing the literary genre to translate precisely into cinematography. This just doesn't work. Imagine if Lord of the Rings spent about 5 minutes in each scene doing close up detailed analysis of the characters surroundings. Yeah.
"A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects." - Time Enough For Love, by Robert Heinlein
Lord of the Rings basically DOES do that by having exhaustive landscape scenes...

Hugo was probably one of the best new films I have seen in the past twelve months. Yet I don't remember seeing it advertised outside a trailer before a different movie.
I say 'best new' because since I'm taking a film course I'm having to watch older, classic films and such. I watched Goodfellas last night and was left wondering why the hell didn't I watch it sooner.
I won't see the movie then. I haven't even read the books anyway.
