Yeah, those atheists who are not aware of the impact religion has had on the world beyond IT CAUSED LOADS OF WARS XD and constantly point out inaccuracies/inconsistencies in the Bible/Qu'ran, completely misunderstanding that they're not intended to be 100% accurate, they're intended to be general moral guidance/inspiring literature about noble ideas to aspire to. Everyone goes through the phase and people need to be shot down when they're going through a phase like this on a regular basis. Confronting so many Dawkins fans, like some annoying Aspie in the school, has single-handedly turned me into a Christian apologist for purposes of theological debates

I wouldn't call myself a fan of his but I find him a helluva lot more likable than, say, the president of American Atheists. I forget his name.

i do believe that the net impact that religion has had on this world has been NEGATIVE but i hate how gung-ho dawkins is about the whole thing, how his arguments are no better than the dime-a-dozen talking points that people post relentlessly on internet forums and how annoying the people who idolise him are.

As an atheist he has a memorable personality I guess, he's someone that sticks out in your brain like an imam as a representative of Muslim faith

i havent read any of his works but i spent quite a while today watching youtube videos of him either criticising theology or debating with theists and all his points/rebuttals suck and eventually end up becoming trite mocking of religion.

Yeah you certainly could argue that the net impact on the world is NEGATIVE but people having religious ideas was a pretty logical consequence of a combination of the mystery of human existence and the insanity of the human brain. The problem is when governments build laws around religion and use it as a vehicle to oppress the people, as well as people who choose to aggressively maintain every religious idea. Beyond dismantling that, I don't believe you can ever ERADICATE religion and it's stupid to suggest you can. And yeah these people are massively annoying. People that constantly remind you that ATHEISM ISN'T A FAITH IT'S THE COMPLETE LACK OF FAITH, point out all the fallacies that they learnt in one second, etc.

"An atheist has to know a lot more than I know. An atheist is someone who knows there is no god. By some definitions atheism is very stupid."

yeah how can you write a book on that shit, 'the god delusion'. yeah, religion is actually bullshit and stupid and its done a bunch of shit and people do/believe stupid things because of it, i think this has been well known for thousands of years and probably popular opinion among 'educated' people since the enlightenment. who gives a shit.

also even conflicts nominally about religion didnt have any underlying basis to do with religion really and would have happened/been sold to the public for other reasons if religion wasnt around

Dawkins preaches to the choir, that's really his only major fault. No one outside of the atheist community actually listens to what he has to say. Most of his talking points are reused but that's because he follows a philosophy I adapted before I even heard of the guy, if it's not broken don't fix it. I read The God Delusion, it wasn't bad. It wasn't exactly amazing but it wasn't bad. I liked The Demon-Haunted World better, partly because Sagan is more eloquent and partly because he doesn't go after religion from some moral high ground with an air of personal offense. He goes after its fervent belief as an impractical and devastating stumbling block to humanity and laments the great achievements and great minds constrained by either an authoritarian church or their own supernatural beliefs. Dawkins does this too but its overshadowed by his vitriol.
"A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects." - Time Enough For Love, by Robert Heinlein
