A fire bender would have nothing against a water bender though, and an air bender could direct the fire away from them, and an earth bender could stop the attack with enough dirt.

Fire benders have to rely on the fact that they are usually the fastest benders. They have to get their opponent before they can defend themselves.

Its more than bits of earth too that makes a plant go from ground to plant, there is a whole chemical process. In some ways metal bending is easier because your just looking for the metal impurities.
