I thought the idea of American-style democracy came from the Iroquois.

it was based on french republican ideals and english legal philosophers, but its based almost wholly on english customs. the concept of a 'bill of rights' comes from the Magna Carta. the uk, as a liberal democracy, developed the first parliament with a coherent set of rules. and no, not really, I don't see how a full-fledged political system can be derived from a Native American tribe.

The Iroquois was a nation of several tribes.

There was a Native American man named Dekanawida or "Great Peacemaker" who came up with the idea for the local tribes to come together in peace, to stop the battles upon battles for prisoners and resources. The Iroquis Conferedracy created the Gayanashagowa, or "Great Law of Peace" which included ideals such as equality among the sexes, voting, and matrilineal lineage. The confederacy was created in the 13 or 14th century.

the roman parliament wasn't a parliament in the same sense of the word today, the senate varied between an advisory council and a body of nobodies. i don't claim that english people have all the traditions to themselves, but they innovated over an existing roman convention. the greeks had direct democracy, nothing like any kind of parliament we have nowadays. the british parliament was the first parliament to actively influence, above most other powers, the affairs of a country. the other parliaments in most other monarchies were originally just advisory bodies with no real power.

it's only Colour if you're talking about a radioactive hue that lives at the bottoms of wells and slowly disintegrates farmers.
