    Exclamation Operation Renaissance

    Goal
Turn PokeDream Forums into a hugely popular community where the coolest Pokemon fans hang out.

    Problem
That is not the case today. We all know the current situation. Compared to a few other well-known Pokemon forums, we're nothing; we don't even register on their radars. We have interesting discussions, but they're mostly not about Pokemon. People join, but don't stay. That's all going to change.

    Solution
In the upcoming months, we're gonna turn the Forums into a cooler place. It's already cool, but we're gonna make it way cooler (http://goo.gl/CCjwL). Two things need to exist, neither of which can exist without the other:

    1. More active members
A high quality community cannot exist without people. We currently have great people (all of you guys), but we need much, much more of them. We need more people to join. Not only do we need people to join, we need them to stay. For good. We need these members to generate interesting discussions.

    2. More interesting discussions
While we already have interesting discussions today, they are mostly not about Pokemon. PokeDream is a Pokemon site. PokeDream Forums is first and foremost a Pokemon discussion board. If the large majority of the discussion is not about Pokemon, then we've failed. We need interesting Pokemon discussions to keep our members coming back.

This is sort of a chicken and egg problem (http://goo.gl/p6XdX). But, we don't have to think of it that way. These two things are bound together in a tight feedback loop. More active members will start more interesting discussions, which will in turn attract more active members, etc. The solution is very clear: we need to attract more active members and get more interesting discussions.

    Game Plan
What are we gonna do specifically? The plan is very straightforward.

To attract more active members, we're gonna promote the Forums heavily. The main PokeDream website is much more popular than the Forums and, up till now, we haven't really taken advantage of that fact. Currently, the Forums feels like a separate entity from the main site. So, we have to integrate Forums components much better into the main site, so that a visit to PokeDream doesn't feel complete without also visiting PokeDream Forums. Essentially, there needs to be much more references to PokeDream Forums from the main site.

To get more interesting discussions, we perhaps need to rework the structure of the forums under Pokemon Discussion. Are all of those forums necessary? Should we combine a few of the less popular ones? Should we split up the more popular ones? This exact course of action on this one is up for debate.

    Results
By January 1st, 2011, I'd like for the Forums to accomplish the following:

    200 Active Members
The definition of an active member is a member who's logged on in the past 15 days. As of now, we have 70 active members.

    10+% Posts Under Pokemon Discussion
Currently, only 7% of posts are under Pokemon Discussion.

    Conclusion
Operation Renaissance starts NOW. Let's use this thread to brainstorm ideas. Together, we're gonna turn PokeDream Forums into something huge.

Sounds easy. Post less in misc and more and pokeman stuff. I think that is something we can do. Probably a "pokemon of the week" thing would increase posts there.

It would be awesome to have PD as active as it once was.. Let's do it.

Perhaps the forums should be advertised more on the main site as opposed to hidden in the corner there.

That'd be great, but we'd only be 10% there. My thought is that we make PokeDream Forums way more popular than it's ever been.

That's what I was getting at in my post. Though, rather than "advertise" it more, I'd like to "integrate" it more. It shouldn't feel forced, like advertising. References to the Forums should feel natural, like it obviously belongs those places.

as a seasoned forum veteran and a guy who knows the ropes, i'd like to throw out a few suggestions that i made a while back when god made a thread about you wanting to fix up the forum. here they are:

    - none of the news broadcasters you hired all those years ago have any interest in pokemon anymore and hardly any of them log onto pd anyway. the only person who occasionally updates is solly and that just ain't enough. my idea is that you advertise for news broadcasters on pd's main site. that means people who still have a prominent interest in pokemon will come to us; they'll help keep your site active, they'll probably start up pokemon discussions in the pokemon board and so forth. it's a win-win situation.

    - some of the pokemon forums need working on. i think it would be good if competitive workshop was made a sub-forum of pokemon games discussion because right now pd just doesn't have enough active competitive battlers and it just makes the forum look dead. putting pokemon connection under pokemon games discussion could work as well but it has a lot more activity than competitive workshop does...

i also think it would be good for the forum if you make a board separate for pokemon black and white. could attract the new generation of pokemon game players.

Lord I have to disagree. The competitive workshop is to seprate of a forum. Although I agree that some forum areas need to be subed for the moment specifically the south lands. The work shop has much more activity then them.

The team workshop does deserve it's own forum, it has had some considerable activity over the years.

Pokemon TCG and Pokemon Anime Discussion, on the other hand really should be sub-forums.

Just wondering, what would these Pokemon discussions entail? Would it be things like "omg guize, AshxBrock 4evr", or what? Because, the way I see it, there's little to appeal to the average poster that can't be obtained in another forum.

PDForums has a fairly consistent userbase, and unfortunately, most of these people are not as interested in Pokemon as they may have been when they first joined. Perhaps this could be because everyone's growing up, shifting away loving Pokemon as an entire franchise. This, combined with the fact that there's been little new content to discuss (alright, apart from the anime series which never ends, except there's very little to discuss there).

I concede, there will be some increased discussion when Black and White come out, but countless other Pokemon sites have that role filled much better. New Pokemon? Serebii already has a list. Walkthroughs? Psypokes' got it covered. Team building? Smogon is dedicated to that like no other. Hell, anything that this forum could offer is already located in the main PD site...

I just don't think there's much that PDForums right now has to offer that any number of other sites can't do, and perhaps better.

I don't want to sound defeatist, or pessimistic, because what I'm really trying to say is what can we do to make PDForums different from the generic sites?

Look around the internet. There are plenty of other sites other there that give good over even better info then the big kahoona pokemon sites. Even though they aren't well known they are respected. And just becuase someone does it "better" doesn't mean we can't try. Plus most sites like that over fixate on one specific thing. We are general. What we need it to be good at general and be the best general that we can be. Lets battle on shoddy make sprites stories and help mewtwo with FAQs and the site. And all at the same time keep out good ol' PD charm. If we do even a bit of that out name will be out there and well respected.

I absolutely agree with that. You'll notice on the main site I've turned TCG and Anime, which were once large sections of the site back in the day, into subsections.

What do you guys think should be the parent forum of TCG and Anime Discussion? Give me a name.

Making Pokedream Forums as popular as it once was seems good enough for a start!

In my personal opinion, the main site has a lot of holes in it, and I mean a LOT. Not everything is being kept up with, and there aren't people active enough to watch the site and update everything every second, like Serebii. If we could form a team that would be willing and able to update the site in a constant manner, we could pick the main site up, and the Forums along with it.

For example, in the games section, all that's listed are the main RPGs and a few of the other games. I don't see any of the Pokemon Ranger games, none of the Mystery Dungeon games are listed, and the second Pokemon Pinball game isn't listed. Consistency is what's missing, which is what makes sites like Serebii and Bulbapedia way more popular. Movesets for 5th Gen Pokemon haven't even been added yet; it kind of makes having a 5th Gen section in the Poke Rep pointless, other than to see sprites or names. It just looks half assed.

As far as improving the Forums, as much as I hate to say it, if rules were enforced more, then the forums would be a more pleasant place for newer members to post. As it is now, most members that have just joined are usually ignored when they ask a question, or are given a smart remark because the question seems stupid. I guess what I'm getting at is making the forum more new-user friendly. Make sure we encourage members to post in the introduction section and welcome them. Keep the actual Pokemon discussion active so that it's easier for newer members to jump in. If anything, the forums need to be correctly separated. For example:

    Main Site/Forums Discussion
    -Site Discussion
    -Forums Discussion
    -Introductions

    Pokemon
    -General
    sub: Anime
    sub: TCG
    sub: Art
    sub: RP
    -Games
    -Competitive Workshop/Battle Tower(?)

    Miscellaneous
    -General
    -Debate
    -Multimedia
    -RP

    Just a thought.

I woun'd mind making the workshop a battling tourny forum too as long as it stays only those 2 things are not a trading forum. The trading forum still needs it own place.
