    Default are message boards declining?

i get the sense that message boards are declining online. all the forums i've ever kept up with/posted on seem to be far less active than they were in the mid-2000s(and at that time everyone always said it was less active than in the early 2000s or late 90s). recently out of curiosity i'd now and then search for the sorts of message boards i used to go on back in the day and none seem very active. is it just that, somehow, message boards of different topics(i have no idea what nerdy teenagers might be more into these days) are more active, or in general are message boards just less active due to facebook etc w/e?

its sort of depressing. message boards are a very particular type of online discourse that can't really be matched by things like blogs or, obviously, social networking things. do people just not want to talk to strangers online anymore?

Twitter/Facebook lets people be way more narcissistic so it appeals to teenagers a lot moree than boards used to.

yeah but 'regular' teenagers were never really the main cohort of message boards anyway. what are nerdy teenagers doing nowadays? it society more accepting of them so they get active on facebook etc as well?

they're all on 9gag or lurking reddit. with the increasing rise of memes and macro sharers teens are able to get the same laughs and entertainment without actually having to contribute, so no discussion is generated.

Yeah I think they are, even popular sites like smogon have sparse activity in the boards its self. Almost all the people I have invited to PD for example have never joined, even if they were good friends.

man maybe this is true. there was like a 7-8 year window where the internet actually promoted social discourse and thats it.

i mean why go through the effort of becoming tight knit like us when you can call yourself a 9gagger right off the bat and feel like a part of smething when there's something like a 9gag/reddit war or stupid shit. no effort, instant fun. not as worth it in the end, but teens don't realize that anymore

I don't really see the appeal of facebook. You never have any worthwhile discussions, all you do is comment on random photos and tell everyone what you are doing even if it is completely mundane.

even the newer members on pd are less apt to be as 'tight knit' as message board posters of a couple years earlier. people on message boards would talk personally and try to meet up etc all the time back in the day, i couldnt imagine guys like justin, lord, rayne, celery having similar dispositions. i dont know if its just a personal difference, a sort of paranoia about the pervasiveness of the net nowadays or a different cultural approach to the internet.

more or less everybody listed is the same age. i would meet up with some people if they were nearby, like kelsh because she seems normal, but i wouldn't go out of my way to go to like canada or central america or something right now.

I think there is a certain fear of the internet in the culture of today, in the news you hear wack stories of employers finding your old sites and firing people.

Honestly, if use a nickname online, your pretty much immune to that. I think there is also a certain anonymous factor found appealing to people that do wish to talk to different people. I think it comes down to privacy, people don't want to be really open and form relationships online.

i don't think it has anything to do with that. meeting up with somebody is probably the most offline thing you could do online. what/how would an employer even find out or care about that? what i worry about is the content we leave behind online for an employer to go looking for. imagine if an employer saw dogar posting porn on a pokemon message board? it wouldn't go over well.

that's cuz you're a weirdo, i wasn't saying anybody was gonna go tell on you. i'm just saying if they did a background check and somehow came up with it. stop pretending like you're immune to everything and perfect.

and god has the audacity to ask why people wouldn't want to post on message boards. because theres weird people who try to find pictures of girls on pokemon forums and say they knows where you live...

If your going for a job where your employer cares enough about what you do in your personal life to go to the 15th page of google to see you talking on pokedream, its not a job worth happening.

it seems like for a "real" message board nowadays(aka, not something like 4chan, or some company-owned official forum of some popular tv show etc) pd is more active than most

how active are the general discussions sections of forums like serebii anyway

I have an account there to keep up with who's posting there from PD for various reasons and honestly it is pretty active.

    this is smogon every day

about 20 posts in each meta
100 posts in basically general pokemon discussion
    50 in wifi
    10 in smogon's article shit
    20 in misc

each gets like a new thread every week

for the biggest competitive battling site out there, that's pretty terrible

Yeah nothing like Gaia but honestly some big pokemon forum names don't do too badly in the misc. considering.
