I think we should get rid of the house of representatives, and replace it with electronically voting on bills over the internet. This would put more pressure on the senate to bow to the will of the people if the majority was more overwhelming for a bill, and it would also make the bills that are being voted on, represent the peoples views better than they do now. We could make sure people who vote on bills are at least slightly educated on them before they vote by having a short quiz on what the bill actually does, even though they will just look up the answers on Google, it will still force people to learn about it before voting.

Yeah that's a no from me, I have mentioned it before but regular people are really stupid, yes the people in the house are pretty moronic, but at least there is a little bit of a professional filter for voting.

Also the house, if I am not mistaken, is largely responsible for making laws and bills and even amendments in the first place, don't see how an open forum discussion on the internet would pave way to actually making bills at the end of the day.

Finally requiring an education is pretty backwards thinking, in the 1970s we abolished things like requiring literacy or a high school education for voting since those practices only served to discriminate different groups.

I would prefer direct voting over the electoral college system, but doing it over the internet will just cause loads of trouble. Server crashes, bandwidth, security and the average stupid person who think computers are black magic would be just a few of the milestones to break.

Clearly the system we have now doesn't cut it, even if you don't like my idea you must have something.

And if we think people a competent enough to serve as jurors, then why can't they vote on laws. I would argue that most of the people who are in charge aren't really in it to fix the country, they are just there to get elected and keep their jobs. The average net worth of people in congress is vastly higher than most Americans, and only egomaniacs really ever run for office. Only about 17 percent of congress are women. There is one admitted atheist/agnostic and about 20-30 others who may be, while the national amount is 20%. There have been six openly gay members of congress, yet the national percentage is about 10%. Congress doesn't really represent the country very well. Plus there all in the pockets of Wall street/Big Oil/Halliburton.

We could hire people to write out some of the more popular issues into bills, or we could just give that job to senators. (Only people in the house of representatives can introduce bills on raising money)

It isn't requiring an education, anyone could easily find the answers online, but they would have to read and look for answers and they would accidentally find out about the bill before they jumped headfirst into the mess.

Over the internet is really the only feasible way to do it, 300 million people will limit the number of direct democracy options. And if Google can handle it's server traffic, I'm sure the government could easily build a server capable of handling that many people. The only major foreseeable issue would be hacking, but if you hired enough computer security majors you could make a pretty safe system. Even if it did get hacked, we would be able to tell, and throw out that particular ballot.

Although to make this feasible we would need to build a giant fiber optic network to try and get everyone connected to the internet, and also make getting involved in the political process a top educational priority.

Also they wouldn't be allowed to vote unless they passed the bill test, which forces you to read.

i like direct democracy as a far off goal. as in after steps are taken to make people less stupid. as stupid as many politicians are(especially republicans) i wouldn't trust the masses to make decisions for a second right now.

someone(as always, preferably me) needs to assume unrivaled control of the functions of government, reform education and economic systems by fiat aimed at making people self-aware, educated and conscious, and then start instituting a more democratic system. this is a simplified outline but generally what i think needs to happen.

Having an actual multiparty system would help because then you would have minority governments. That doesn't really matter in the US, though, since there's no party solidarity and every party member can vote whatever way they want. What really needs to happen is that the US adopt a system of party solidarity, followed by a more open party system.

Making a system that made it easier for third parties would help add more ideas to public discordance. The democrats and republicans are pretty stagnant when it comes to ideas, one is just better at operating than the other.

Party solidarity is stupid, we should just have a mass of people with completely different ideas all with their own agendas. Party solidarity just leads to stagnation.

What other ideas could possibly be needed by a third party, we have dumb ideas: Republicans, and not retarded ideas: democrats. Again, we can't attempt to introduce any other parties into the system until its not like this.
