Default In a geration or two, is family nationality going to matter anymore in America?

This is the insanity of what is my nationality.

    25% German
    25% Polish
    3/16 Irish
    1/8 Check Republic
1/16 Jamaican (which is where my last name comes from... which is a German last name, dual immigration bitches)
    1/16 English
    1/16 Hungarian / French / misc

If by some god awful chance I reproduce, by child's last name will only be relevant to the country 1/32 of them.

Ive talked to some people and apparently I am not in the same boat to, its a relatively common thing. In like one generation most children's school day nationality pie charts will be to convoluted to make sense of them. There is going to be a point maybe in like 50-75 years where people are just going to have to say "I'm American" because they have completely lost the other nationality. What do you guys think? This probably isn't relevant to our non-Americans.

I've been thinking about this for years. When will "American" become a nationality? Furthermore, when do countries become a "race"(using this word synonymously with nationality) in and of themselves? When did people born in Germany become German, French in France, etc.

Id say it takes about 400 years to develop a nationality, an example I can think of is when the saxons invaded Britain around 800 and by the 1200s they considered themselves as English.

Kirby, I think you'll understand why I don't at times really trust any historical fact you may say ever. This is one of those times.

I guess we will have to define words more properly. Indeed, people who are porn in America are indeed Americans. If one were to call this nationality, then indeed American is then a nationality. Now, if we take the word nationality and use is synonymously with the word race, which many do in America, be it in casual conversation or in filling out information on tests or other various forms, then the word nationality does not so much mean where you were born but rather what your "blood" is. Nationality (in both definitions) and race are all socially constructed so their meanings can be transformed in time. I ask when will the word American be classified as the second definition of nationality? I then ask when in other instances in history has this happened, i.e. France and Germany etc., and how long did it take for this distinction to take place?

Another interesting way of looking at this is so:

1st generation American off the boat from, let us say, Russia, in 1900, age 20. That person has kids with someone and thus the 2nd generation American is born. That person has a child and the 3rd generation American is born. That person has a kid and the 4th generation American is born. One could argue that many immigrants from central, southern and eastern Europe during the turn of the century are indeed going through this existential crisis and thus society is now, or at least soon will, have to socially construct a definition that figures out who they are. My hypothesis that within the next generation or so, many people who fit this category will HAVE to be called "American." This is of course if we are to be labeled by the color of our skin or, going with the new fad in academic circles, the continent we supposedly came from generations ago. But again, I argue that American will become a nationality as the replacement label for many people in America.

    1st generation- Russian
    2nd generation- Russian American
    3rd generation- American Russian
    4th generation- American

My family history stems mostly from Germany and Ireland. Do I consider myself either one? No, but apparently I should be genetically good with beer.

Many Germans tried to benefit from imperialism during this time period, it really wasn't all too uncommon.

In the same vein, I've always wondered if people were like this in every country. I mean I assume in France people still will say they're half German, half English. I'm also assuming people use American as a nationality in foreign countries. Is there even an active member who is from another country?

It doesn't matter now. Every American I've ever talked to tried to convince me there's some Irish blood in them; same with people from Liverpool. It's the same with people all over the world; just read up on a history of invasions and mass migrations. I've never much cared for it, I don't think anyone else does either. Hell, I'm one eighth Argentinian if I feel like identifying myself like that. I don't though, because it's damn gimmicky. What matters is where you grew up and how you feel about it. Nothing else really.
Well, I open my eyes and I see things. I've seen spirits moving through the walls. I've seen a vortex coming through the wall. I've seen amorphous little balls of light bouncing all around in the front yard through the window. I've seen giant bugs on the floor. I was in a hotel room in Amarillo, Texas, and all I remember is standing on the bed and seeing the whole wall in front of me filled with lights that were [makes popping sound] popping like popcorn out of the wall. Then I'll wake up and I go "Wow, I was standing on my bed and staring at this wall."

    Nobody ever does this.
