I don't recall what went down with the fair tax the other day when we were talking about it. Oh yeah one of you guys raised the point about rich people buying overseas. They gonna build their McMansions overseas? In reality there aren't very many things they can buy overseas with ease that would make their savings worth it, at least not enough that it affects revenues an insane amount. Plus, there's going to be some tax evasion in any system, the Fair Tax eliminates that while creating a fair, progressive, consumption based tax for everyone.

It doesn't though, it's actually pretty progressive.

Someone making 15k cannot afford a tax, and taking 10% of 15k affects a person's disposable income more than someone making 180k. $18,000 is chump change to a six figure employee, but $1,500 can make a difference to someone who now only has $13,500 to work with. Given that they are not somehow homeless, they still have to pay for electricity, food and water before they can even think about clothes and health care, and welfare may not be enough help to cover expenses, so that person is stuck in poor person's rut.

its basically:

the poorest people actually pay less. the richest people also pay less. everyone else pays more. government funding thus has to decrease. but they claim it will be ok because a bunch of money held abroad will come back into the country when people think it won't get taxed as income. oh cool supply side economics, thats always worked in the face of lowering government expenditures.
