Fans who take anything too seriously are annoying fans, no matter what fandom they are expressing.
The reason why MLP in particular is widespread in the "Annoying" scale is because it started on the internet, which made it spread faster and wider than a fandom that starts outside the internet, like Breaking Bad or Invader Zim. The moment anything gains a majority of teenage/college audience, it's is instantly all over the place.

i'd argue it's through association. i've been posting on pokemon forums with rayne and lord since the 8th grade, i'm not on here right now so much because of pokemon more than i am because it's an easy way to shoot the shit when i've got nothing else to do.
