for the past month and a half i've been reading at a halfway decent pace. finished a mid-sized collection of 2 short dostoevsky novels, a 600 page biography of Napoleon, tender is the night and now am about 150 pages into the savage detectives (bolano).
the napoleon biography is awesome by the way, if anyone has any sort of interest in that period of history they should definitely read it. by steven englund. the writing style is beautiful, it's very comprehensive, and the way the chapters are set up with titles, opening quotations, etc is impressive in and of itself. plus its published by harvard press so you know it has some academic validity. also i was able to fill up an index card i used as a bookmark with words i didnt know used in the book.
anyway i'd recommend all those books i mentioned actually. the dostoevsky collection was the gambler and the double. the gambler wasnt too great but the double was awesome, maybe the most purely 'funny' book i've ever read, i actually laughed out loud a couple times. and in general if you ever want to read dostoevsky, get the peaver and volokhonsky translations.

I'm in an awkward position where I don't know whether to like fiction or non-fiction now. I like both, but I can't find the motivation to actually read.
I'm really disheartened because it seems like all fiction these days is complete shit, and a lot of historical non-fiction is interesting, but wordy.
i finished Return of The King this year does that count?
dude i really want to sit down one weekend and power through the lotr trilogy, like taking a large gulp of cough syrup. just get it over with. that way at least ill have enough ground to criticize it.
the fact that its pages and pages of no substance whatsoever will only make it easier to get through it quickly

as a creative enterprise lotr is fascinating. its just dull fiction. youre being obnoxious. at least watch the movies.
also ive decided to buy atlas shrugged and finish it during my flight
ive watched them all already. i got the extended edtion bluray for christmas watching behind the scenes and appendices. they really give alot of detail and have you think more about the movies and what there really about. would recommend them if you have seen the moviesOriginally Posted by Rayne

ive read em. the appendices are more interesting than the stories.
yeah, fantasy universes are usually interesting. i'll probably never read the song of fire and ice series but when game of thrones came out i did read an extensive fan wiki on the series and it was pretty cool.
no the movies appendiesces have nothing too do with the book ones. they're like in depth movie ones on how there went into the designs and how they made sets and props and creatures. then they have like story how it went from book to movie why they changed things and how they see it, just different perspectives really
