a couple pages into chapter three i wanted to just stop reading the whole book in incredulous disgust. then i read it a second time and really liked it!
im at the chapter where joyce is writing about how dogar is a faggot and that everyone on pd needs to post more
been reading the stranger in french today, never knew how short it was. probably finish it by next week.
thanks a lot rodman
so after about a week and a half of being busy and sick retarded my reading i finished it this morning.
its obviously a work of genius but i dont regard it was one of the best novels i've ever read. i see the value of his being experimental in his writing but as a result too much of it isnt particularly enjoyable to read, although there's definitely a bunch of fantastic writing in it. it probably gets exponentially better with a second reading, but fuck that for a long time. it was pretty exhausting at times.
best episode: oxen in the sun
worst: the last. im james joyce the last 40 pages of my novel are going to be a single sentence. fuck you joyce. the actual ending was superb though.
how did you not like the last chapter
if you have a wife or girlfriend at any point and watch her about to fall her asleep you can now with the help of joyce pretty much know exactly what she's thinking and that she's mostly cynical about all your activities and doesn't really respect you
i dont like reading 40 page sentences, it was exhausting. there were some great things about it and i didnt even 'dislike' it really, but of all the episodes i'd definitely rank it last.
oh wait, no. the chapter with the newspaper headlines was the worst.

Solly posting what we're all thinking
I still have to read Anna Karenina

i fucking love circe. if you lose faith in ulysses circe restores it for you. like when he's imagining becoming the prime minister and a prophet and he's imagining the soap he forgot to take out of his pocket burst into song. genuinely hilarious
the problem i think for ulysses is that it starts with the overly difficult daedalus chapters which aren't really sufficient to fill you with passion
currently reading vanity fair
im reading 100 years of solitude and its astoundingly good
i'm currently reading Kathy Reiches' book series. and one over social engineering
