I've lived next to a reserve for most of my life. I have nothing against natives, but reserves are the closest things you can get to getthos in Canada.

Don't the larger cities in Canada have "Ghettos?"

Not really. I live in the fourth largest city in Canada, and while there are poorer neighborhoods people tend to avoid (Forest lawn comes to mind), anybody living there will tell you to stay away from the reserve.

Reserves are self-imposed, ethnically defined areas with poor infrastructure, extremely low median income, rampant drug addiction (alcoholism mainly), and a tendency to "trap" those raised in it. Pretty much the definition of a modern ghetto. Throughout Canadian history there have been many attempts to dissolve or change the reserve system from the disadvantageous terms written 150 years ago, but so far no consensus has been reached on what to change the system to. The current state of First Nations status in Canada can be traced to the implementation of Residential Schools, which destroyed the culture of native children then sent them back to their reserves. With no infrastructure and no services, but a western style of life, the reserves changed from vast tracts of land reserved for traditional lifestyle to slummy ghettos, where a combination of tax benefits and racism discourages the native population from leaving or changing.

The issue now remains an extremely hot-button topic in Canadian politics with no obvious solution, at best described as the "Native issue" and at worst described as the "Canadian holocaust".

Of course, this is in a prairie city. Vancouver has places like Surrey, "the car theft capital of North America", which is overrun by Asian immigrants instead of natives. I'd still say reserves are much more like ghettos than Surrey is, though.

From what I've seen of urban Illinois and the reservations in Northern North Dakota, I'd say that the reservations are much worse off than actual ghettos. Not only, like you said, are people discouraged of leaving, but they tend to be isolated from everywhere else, both geographically and ethnically. However, in the US, even locally, no one talks about it, despite it being such a big problem. They all just say "Don't go North"

Not really, Vancouver has the highest concentration of "visible minorities" of east Asian origin, most native populations live further north.

You can pretty much classify everyone on PD as either white, middle class, potheads or college students.
