Yes God, I love sarcasm too, but this is hardly the place to use it.

where was the sarcasm. whenever mao and stalin are brought up i feel it prudent to point out the many areas where they excelled at heads of state, so as not to perpetuate the rampant tendency to hold lef wing leaders to higher standards than right wing leaders.
"I'll go," said Chagataev. "But what will I do there? Build socialism?"
    "What else?" said the secretary.

I thought the whole point of communism was to create a class-less, property-less state where higher standards are given to no-one?

Those atrocities were committed in the name of a "Communist ideology that was explicitly atheistic," not atheism itself. And I would love to hear how atheism inspires murder. Atheists do understand morality. Question: Where does morality come from?
    Answer: Society.

Atheism is by definition no belief in God. Therevada Buddhists are atheists.

In my opinion, religion was originally invented to cure curiosity, then later to create morality our of fear, and soon after obedience out of fear for one's soul. If anything, Communism was basically the first form of control placed without the threat of eternity in hell. It was also built on a much larger basis of STANDARDS (not morals) which are considerate of other people's equality, something that religion has failed to do. Stating that Communism is an example of the worst parts of Atheism is not only incorrect, it is also a contradiction, simply because the basic standards of Communism are both stabel and equal.

In which case, the many atrocities of the past many forum-goers are hinting at in this thread were not caused by Christianity, but comitted in the name of Christianity. Is that not the same as being caused by Christianity?

And I would love to hear how atheism inspires murder.
Atheists are sometimes criticized for a perceived unnecessarily harsh, or even prejudicial, way some of them deal with people holding theistic world views. WIKIPEDIA
Actually, murder can be done in the name of anything, including religion. But since you asked...

Atheists do understand morality. Question: Where does morality come from?
    Answer: Society.
Therefore, society as a whole understands morality, regardless of personal beliefs, does it not?

Atheism is by definition no belief in God. Therevada Buddhists are atheists.

If i killed someone and said that it was in your honor, but you didn't want that person dead, would you say you should be killed?

Again, simply doing something in the name of something doesn't make it responsible.

Saying "society as a whole" is like saying "All atoms as a whole", not much can be applied to the whole.

Some atheists (e.g. Richard Dawkins) are indeed intolerant of religion. Dawkins' reason is that he believes religion to be dangerous.

The Crusades were caused directly by Christianity because they were organised and funded by the Church, and the main objective was "Take and hold the Holy Land."

Morality is a set of standards the majority expect others to follow. The punishment for not is ultimately rejection from the group, either through exile or execution. It's limited to the range of a particular society, as each one has its own 'moral' majority.

Actually someone does, and that someone is fairly sure that the Holy Land isn't a variable that depends on which division you're in.

Actually, that someone doesn't give a crap. Yes, there are many ways that the two are similar, but there are still quite a few differences.

Had it occurred to you that I really don't care to learn much about religion? All the religious hypocrites can go fuck themselves to hell.

All hail God, knower of things!

fyi I have nothing against religion. I just don't like people attacking my faith (or lack thereof) without acknowledging the failings of their own, especially if their attack is bunk.

I'll correct whoever I want. Anyone (I know) who claims to be a christian will surely object to being called catholic.
