    Default Racism Discussion

    So yeah, at Hebrew school this year we mostly just debate about random stuff, which is actually kind of cool. Anyway, the first day we went on a bit about racism and the like, and I decided to start a discussion here about it. I'll just pose this quote I came up with;

Stereotyping is natural. Racism is acting upon it.
Eh. Anyway, commence basic discussion, see whether the quote is true or whatnot, i really don't kno how to make a thread here, do I? Ah well.

Anyway, commence basic discussion, see whether the quote is true or whatnot,
Obviously it is. Every single person in the world is prejudice about every single type of different person in the world whether they will admit it or not. Anyway this is too broad a topic probably.

I agree. Both that the quote is correct and that this topic is too broad.

Though I must say that racism and similar prejudices are often passed on by others. If your parents are racist, you're more likely to be racist. If they're opposed, you're more likely to be opposed. That may also change depending on who one associates themself with. Regardless of what their parents say, if someone associates themself with racist friends, their opinions will probably be swayed that way.

i don't think that if yur parents are racist means yu are
    my mom is really racist
like she hates mexicans and blacks
she's ok with whites but she wouldn't want me getting married to one
and the only race she likes ...azn
    and i'm not racist...
i have nothing wrong with any race

    Or so they say.

I'd have to be against that, in most cases parents are a major, if not biggest influence in our childhood on our opinions and morals. That's why children being raised in a certain religion grow up with those ideals molded in. So obviously if your parents were to have some sort of racial disliking to say, Cubans it would have at least some sort of impact on you, depending on the extent.

You could say stereotyping is natural, it's impossible to avoid and I expect all of us to have some sort of general overview of a, in this particular case, race. Stereotyping now however has developed into a sort of derogatory, so I guess a fairer term would be generalization. We generalize things like race, when you use it against someone [can't exactly find the words for this] it becomes racism.

But nowadays racism can even go to the extent of assuming african-americans are, say, great at basketball. That's getting a bit petty, although racism is a very pressing concern I would find that society it getting a tad touchy. It lies within all our homes, I can admit, but what's classed as racism is seemingly going a bit far.

Did you make up that quote yourself? Insightful. ^^

Going to agree with the too broad of a topic point, but I still agree with the quote.

And Wendy, the quote is from the play Avenue Q, if I'm correct.

Eh. 'tis what comes of just doing your best to remember the quote itself. >_> And as far as I know, I came up with the quote myself, though I suppose I wouldn't be surprised if someone else had come up with the same thing...

    aahahahhahahaha

I honestly find it hard not to laugh sometimes during Holocaust videos. The videos themselves don't make me laugh, it's the people's reactions to what is happening.

Well, to me the whole point of debating is the explore the wider topic. Even with something small like "Boy Racers", the real goal is to be exploring the deeper meaning, which here would be something along the lines of the responsibility of youth. I like this topic.

I hate racism. I'm white, and I went out with a black dude one time, and my mom called him, cussed him out, and grounded me. What's up with parents not wanting their kids to date different races?

Here's some food for thought. Let's focus more on one single area of current events, for example the very recent Dog The Bounty Hunter issue.

Basic outline is that a audio conversation between Duane Chapman - or Dog, star of the TV series Dog The Bounty Hunter - and his son Tucker was obtained by media. Because of it his show has been cancelled. His overall language was, to put it, vulgar but the main reason stated was because of the use of the word, nigga. For more info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dog_the...ng_racial_slur

So that's basically the story. Thoughts? Is the world to sensitive to racism that we pry into personal, private conversations?

Here's a song from Avenue Q that I think about sums it up...

    Princeton:
    You're a little bit racist.

    Kate Monster:
Well, you're a little bit too.

    Princeton:
I guess we're both a little bit racist.

    Kate Monster:
Admitting it is not an easy thing to do...

    Princeton:
    But I guess it's true.

    Kate Monster:
    Between me and you,
    I think

    Both:
    Everyone's a little bit racist
    Sometimes.
    Doesn't mean we go
    Around committing hate crimes.
Look around and you will find
    No one's really color blind.
    Maybe it's a fact
    We all should face
    Everyone makes judgments
    Based on race.

    Princeton:
Now not big judgments, like who to hire
or who to buy a newspaper from -

    Kate Monster:
    No!

    Princeton:
No, just little judgments like thinking that Mexican
busboys should learn to speak goddamn English!

    Kate Monster:
    Right!

    Both:
    Everyone's a little bit racist
    Today.
So, everyone's a little bit racist
    Okay!
    Ethinic jokes might be uncouth,
    But you laugh because
    They're based on truth.
    Don't take them as
    Personal attacks.
    Everyone enjoys them -
    So relax!

    Princeton:
All right, stop me if you've heard this one.

    Kate Monster:
    Okay!

    Princeton:
There's a plane going down and there's only
one paracute. And there's a rabbi, a priest...

    Kate Monster:
    And a black guy!

    Gary Coleman:
    Whatchoo talkin' 'bout Kate?

    Kate Monster:
    Uh...

    Gary Coleman:
You were telling a black joke!

    Princeton:
Well, sure, Gary, but lots of people tell black jokes.

    Gary Coleman:
    I don't.

    Princeton:
Well, of course you don't - you're black!
But I bet you tell Polack jokes, right?

    Gary Coleman:
Well, sure I do. Those stupid Polacks!

    Princeton:
Now, don't you think that's a little racist?

    Gary Coleman:
Well, damn, I guess you're right.

    Kate Monster:
    You're a little bit racist.

    Gary Coleman:
Well, you're a little bit too.

    Princeton:
We're all a little bit racist.

    Gary Coleman:
    I think that I would
    Have to agree with you.

    Princeton/Kate Monster:
    We're glad you do.

    Gary Coleman:
    It's sad but true!
    Everyone's a little bit racist -

    All right!

    Kate Monster:
    All right!

    Princeton:
    All right!

    Gary Coleman:
    All right!
    Bigotry has never been
    Exclusively white

    All:
If we all could just admit
That we are racist a little bit,
    Even though we all know
    That it's wrong,
    Maybe it would help us
    Get along.

    Brian:
Hey guys, what are you laughing about?

    Gary Coleman:
    Racism!

    Brian:
    Cool.

    Christmas Eve:
    BRIAN! Come back here!
    You take out lecycuraburs!

    Princeton:
    What's that mean?

    Brian:
    Um, recyclables.
    Hey, don't laugh at her!
How many languages do you speak?

    Kate Monster:
    Oh, come off it, Brian!
    Everyone's a little bit racist.

    Brian:
    I'm not!

    Princeton:
    Oh no?

    Brian:
    Nope!

    How many Oriental wives
    Have you got?

    Christmas Eve:
    What? Brian!

    Princeton:
    Brian, buddy, where you been?
    The term is Asian-American!

    Christmas Eve:
    I know you are no
    Intending to be
    But calling me Oriental -
    Offensive to me!

    Brian:
I'm sorry, honey, I love you.

    Christmas Eve:
    And I love you.

    Brian:
    But you're racist, too.

    Christmas Eve:
    Yes, I know.
    The Jews have all
    The money
    And the whites have all
    The power.
    And I'm always in taxi-cab
    With driver who no shower!

    Princeton:
    Me too!

    Kate Monster:
    Me too!

    Gary Coleman:
    I can't even get a taxi!

    All:
    Everyone's a little bit racist
    It's true.
    But everyone is just about
    As racist as you!
If we all could just admit
That we are racist a little bit,
    And everyone stopped being
    So PC
Maybe we could live in -
    Harmony!

    Christmas Eve:
    Evlyone's a ritter bit lacist!

A couple of years ago, I made fast friends with an adorable Yemeni girl in my drawing class. For the following year and a half, she and her twin sister were my best friends. Then one day, she asked to borrow a photo I took of the three of us for her friend to put online. But over the weekend, their racist reprobate of a father found it, threw a hissy fit and swore that if he ever found out they were associating with a non-Yemeni male, he would have them taken out of school and sent to Yemen (a tad ironic since they were born here). The day I found out about this, unfortunately was Valentines Day forever ruining that holiday for me (and I already hated it).

My mom hopes I'll marry a Jewish women, something about the mother has to be jewish for the kids to be technically Jewish. Eh. Anyway, she promised she supposedly won't go insane if I choose otherwise...thankfully for me.

Believe me, having to find a Jewish woman you might actually want to marry...put simply there'd be a very limited market.

Real-life charm is quite different from e-charm, so I wouldn't know. But I can probably assume a yes.
