A lot of schools are cracking down on the usage of the popular online encyclopedia. Why? Well, because it can be freely edited by anyone at anytime, wonderfully displayed by Tim here.
My opinion: I think that it is reliable, as my teacher says, there are "wikinerds" around the country that are constantly viewing edits to the website and checking their consistancy with the truth. Sure some things such as the Helen Keller incident are overlooked, but if you are going to use Wikipedia, you should be looking at the last edit line at the bottom, if it's that day, then you can always check when the last update of the section you were looking at. If it seems suspicious, you can always try another source or cross reference.
So I say they should just trust if a student has the ability to depict what is appropriate, what sounds right, and to check either by cross reference or by other means.
