I confess I believe he was working on Dumbledore's orders- that he told Dumbledore of this Unbreakable Vow, which Dumbledore then decided that Snape's position as an infiltrator of the DE's was more important than his heading of the Order. He constantly down-played his own importance throughout the entire book- a move like that would be expected.
His begging at the end of the book was a plea not to be saved, but to be killed. So Snape could continue to play the part.
Why else do you think he refused to let Harry use the Unforgivable Curses? He knew he'd land in Azkaban- he stopped Harry from doing anything to further get himself in trouble.
