I think he means that the race between Obama and Clinton going on so long will lead to more negative ads and comments and such, therefore lowering the democratic party's image and giving McCain time to secure his place and emerge as the clean one.

Hillary's not going to win and maybe 3% of voters in a General Election even remember anything from the primaries, much less care.
Well obviously she isn't gonna win
But I know a few people who actually buy all this stuff she's saying about Barrack and now they aren't going to vote for him. Granted that they won't vote for McCain, but they still won't be votes for Obama either.
