Outskirt Stand
Overview: A small area consisting of a model of a locomotive. You will visit this place again in the future.
Guide: When you first start the game, you will see a cut-scene showing Team Snagem's Hideout being destroyed. Watch it (you have no other choice!). Afterwards, you will find yourself next to a train in a place called Outskirt Stand. Walk towards it and a couple of people will walk out, apparently talking about something. After the scene, go into the train. The only thing you can do there is talk to other people. When you think you've had enough time there, leave the train. Shortly after, a trainer will come out and challenge you to a battle. He has two lv. 24 Zigzagoon. Beat him and then leave Outskirt Stand by simply walking off the screen. This will take you to the Map. Select Phenac City and you'll be on your way!
Phenac City
Overview: A beautiful city full of fountains. You will meet your partner here.
Guide: The second you arrive in Phenac City, you will see two men carrying a bag, and it's moving. One of the men will challenge you to a battle. He has two Whismur, one at lv. 24, and the other at lv. 25.
Defeat him and the two men will run off. You will also see that the bag was holding a girl, who becomes your partner. Let's name her Voila. She thanks you for saving her and joins you on your journey in return.
There's a Pokemon Center and PokeMart in town. In the Pokemon Center, you can save using the PC and heal your Pokemon. There are also a few trainers in town who will battle you. Even though you can't snatch any Pokemon from them, you'll want the Exp. Points.
After Voila joins you, you're free to explore the town for a while. Once you think that you've done enough sight-seeing, it's time to pay a visit to the Mayor. He lives in one of the houses near the Phenac Pre-Gym, the building in the center of the second floor of town. After you've had a talk with him, head to the Colosseum, located in the Northern-most part of town. Talk to the people inside, including the Receptionist. When you leave, you will be encountered by members of Team Snagem. They will reveal something about your past and then one will challenge you to a battle. He has a lv. 27 Koffing, and a lv. 25 Corphish.
After you defeat the weakling, head to the PokeMart (Shop) in the town. Talk to the woman at the back of the first floor of the shop. Then, go back to Outskirt Stand. Talk to the Bartender, who will give you five free PokeBalls. From now on, you can buy PokeBalls from him for the price of $200.
Back To Phenac City
Now that you are equipted with PokeBalls, head for the Mayor's house again. There you will find Mirror B, a shaggy looking fellow, and two other Evil Trainers. You will have to battle both of them, and the best part is that you'll be able to snatch your first Shadow Pokemon. Miror B. Peon Folly has a lv. 26 Whismur and a lv. 25 Lotad. Miror B. Peon Trudly has three Pokemon: lv. 25 Duskull, lv. 25 Spinarak, and lv. 30 Makuhita.
Trudly's Makuhita is a Shadow Pokemon, and can be easily knocked out with Espeon's Confusion; however, don't use it. Catching a Shadow Pokemon is exactly like catching a wild Pokemon. Try to use Normal-type attacks, such as Espeon's Return, to lower Makuhita's HP enough to catch it with a PokeBall.
Tip: Before and after you snag a Shadow Pokemon, be sure to save at the nearest PC!
Once you have caught Makuhita (or defeated Trudly), the three trainers you saw in the building will block all exits of Phenac City. You can only battle one of them, but they each have a Shadow Pokemon. This is pretty much like picking starting Pokemon. Your choices are Bayleef (West Exit), Quilava (East Exit), and Croconaw (South Exit). These three are all Shadow Pokemon. All Pokemon are great additions to your team, so choose wisely. You'll be able to snag all of them after you beat the Boss.
Use Espeon's Confusion against Grimer and Espeon's Return against Spoink. Use Umbreon's Bite to bring down the Shadow Pokemon's HP. If you want, you can train at Phenac's Pre-Gym. The trainers there are simple to beat, and usually stick to one type of Pokemon. I suggest you to challenge them to further purify your new Shadow Pokemon and Makuhita.
After you defeat the weak trainers, Justy, the Pre-Gym Leader, will tell you to come back when you have 6 Pokemon and when they are stronger (all at about lv. 40) so that he can challenge you.
