Choosing a set of attacks for a Pokemon is very important for a Pokemon. Choosing the right ones can help it become a much better Pokemon, and able to handle more and take down more. There are guides for movesets, and for creating your own movesets, so I won't go into great detail here. A few tips:
- Never have 2 attacks of the same type, that means no Hydro Pump and Surf together. Why? To get more effectiveness out of the moveset. A Blastoise can score more 'Super Effectives', therefore doing more damage with Surf, Earthquake, Ice Beam and Iron Tail than a Blastoise with Surf, Hydro Pump, Skull bash and Return.
- The exception to the above rule is if you find another move of the same type, but has an extra effect with it. Say you have Body Slam and Smellingsalt. You could paralyze with Body Slam, then hit them hard with Smellingsalt and repeat. Not the best example, but if think you can see what I mean.
- STAB is good. Now what's this you ask? Same Type Attack Bonus, meaning when an attack type is matched with the user's type, it's multiplied by 1.5. Example- 50 becomes 75, 100 becomes 150, 200 becomes 300!
- Stat moves are useful! Got a Scyther? Swords Dance first. What's that? You would've gotten rid of the foe in 2 turns anyway? That may be true, but then you'll take the next guy with one hit, won't you? Use these where appropriate. Barrier on an Alakazam won't boost its Defense too much, whereas Iron Defense (Which also raises Defense by 2 stages) would give an incredible boost to Aggron's Defense.
- Generally, stat moves that affect the foe, such as Screech, aren't normally prefered over increasing your own stats. This is cause once the foe is down, you have to do that again. Of course, there are situations that can work, such as an Umbreon with Screech, Confuse Ray, Double Team and maybe Return. Screech here would not only help its Return strength, but increase damage when the foe hurts itself.
- Alright that's the stat moves done. Now, what if the opponent does the same thing. There are some counters for this in place. 1- You can use Psych Up to copy their changes, making you just as powered up. Or there's 2- Use Haze. This will affect all Pokemon on the field, not just the foe. This returns stats to normal, including yours. And 3- Use Roar or Whirlwind. This switches out the desired foe, ridding them of their increases.
- In 2 on 2, think about your moves carefully. There are a few more available (Helping Hand/Follow Me) now, and also other moves change a little. Surf hits both foes. But there's a drawback here. Its power is halfed! Choose Waterfall instead if you like to hit just one with full force.

This wasn't going to get its own section, just a spot in tips. But it just wouldn've worked, so here it is!
Any stat effecting move works on stages, from -6 to 6, where you start the battle at stage 0. It's easy to work out what stage your on if keeping track, but can be harder to remember which stat's at what stage when multiple stats are changed. A Swords Dance will raise Attack by 2 stages, where a Leer would reduce Defense by just 1 stage and so on. The number of stages at move raises or lowers a stat is listed with each move. General, sharply or harshly is 2 stages, and anything else is just 1 stage. The tables below shows how much each stage effects a stat for normal stats and Accuracy and Evaision. As you can see, just one Swords Dance will double attack power!
